Risks of Being Over Weight

It is well known that there are many risks when someone is overweight or obese. Worldwide, millions of people die a premature death due to being overweight every year.

The study took place in 2015 and it looked at people who had an unhealthy BMI and the link to diseases like cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Despite public health efforts, the rise of obesity is on the rise in adults and children around the world. Researchers estimated that 4 million deaths occurred annually for people who had a high BMI. 40% of these deaths are in people who were overweight but not yet obese.

The research shows that being overweight may be as risky as being obese. The latest rate of obesity is greater in children, so it’s more important than ever before to intervene and to stop this trend.

What is considered a healthy weight (BMI 20 to 25) was the category with the lowest health risk which is unsurprising.

Causes of Obesity:

Obesity is usually caused by consuming fatty and sugary foods with high-calorie content. If you don’t burn off the calories with regular exercise then the excess energy is stored in the body as fat.  People in the modern world are at increased risk of obesity due to consuming excessive amounts of fast food and spending too much time sitting down at work or in a car.

In rare cases, weight gain can be caused by other health conditions such as an underactive thyroid gland.

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Early death
