Risks of Smoking

Anne Penman Laser Therapy is all about taking a positive approach focused on the benefits and rewards of change. However, we do also recognise that people should be aware of the risks of being overweight, smoking and not dealing with stress in the right manner.

Risks of Smoking

Smoking causes anguish and heartache wherever it goes. It’s one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK.

Over 100,000 people per year die from smoking in the UK while others live with smoking-related illnesses that are debilitating.

Smoking can cause many serious conditions if you smoke yourself and through passive smoking. 90% of lung cancers are caused by smoking. It also causes cancer in other parts of the body such as the mouth, lips, throat, voice box, bladder, kidney and stomach.

Other conditions can be caused by smoking as it damages the blood circulation and heart too. Smoking can also cause heart attacks, heart disease, damaged blood vessels, cerebrovascular disease and more.

Health risks of passive smoking

Your loved ones are also at risk due to passive smoking or ‘second-hand smoke.’ It’s caused by smoke from the tip of the lit cigarette and from the smoke that the smoker exhales.

Breathing in passive smoke can increase the chances of non-smokers developing lung cancer by around ¼. Although the smoking ban has cut this risk to non-smokers, it’s still a real risk to babies and children. A child who’s exposed to smoke can develop meningitis, long-lasting cough and chest infections.

General risks of smoking and second-hand smoking:

  • Cancers such as lung, lips and mouth
  • Heart Disease
  • Heart Attacks
  • Damaged blood vessels
